Waves, Waterfalls and Ripples: Water in Japanese Art

Majestic waves, rushing waterfalls and rippling streams can be found in this amazing exhibition, which examines the fascination with water as an element in Japanese art. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a prize-winning, hand-embroidered screen depicting an extraordinarily realistic scene of turbulent ocean waves that was created especially for the 1915 San Francisco Panama Pacific Exposition. Recent museum research on this magnificent work has uncovered the fact that Seizaburo Kajimoto, the name thought to be that of the designer/embroidery master, is actually a pseudonym; the artist’s real name was Kiyoshi Hashio (1888–1964). The exhibition also includes some 20 wood block prints and represents the artistic output of well-known artists such as Hiroshige, Hokusai and others.
